After the evaluation of the answers, the actual (raw) marks obtained by a candidate will be considered for computing the GATE Score. For multi-session papers (subjects), raw marks obtained by the candidates in different sessions will be converted to Normalized marks for that particular subject. Thus, raw marks (for single session papers) or normalized marks (for multi- session papers) will be used for computing the GATE Score, based on the qualifying marks. Calculation of Normalized Marks for Multi-session Papers In GATE 2019, examination for some papers may be conducted in multi-sessions. Hence, for these papers, a suitable normalization is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions. The normalization is done based on the fundamental assumption that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions". This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2019 is large and the procedure for allocation of session to candidates is random.

Hence, for these papers, a suitable normalization is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions. GATE Score is calculated with the help of Normalized GATE marks. For all those papers conducted in a single session, only actual GATE marks will be considered to calculate the GATE Score. For all multi-session papers, the following three parameters calculated to obtain the result of each candidate. Actual GATE Marks Normalized GATE Marks GATE Score For all single session papers, the following two parameters defined in the result of each candidate. Actual GATE Marks GATE Score Actual GATE Marks For multiple-choice questions, 1 mark is awarded for every correct answer, and the 1/3 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. There is no negative marking in the case of numerical questions. GATE actual (raw) marks are awarded out of a total of 100 marks, for around 65 questions.
